Band pull-apart
Shoulders · Band · also upper back
Set up
A light resistance band.
Steps
- Stand tall holding the band in front of you at shoulder height, hands shoulder-width apart.
- Keeping your arms straight, pull the band apart by moving your hands out to the sides.
- Stop when the band nearly touches your chest.
- Bring your hands back together slowly.
Keep in mind
- Squeeze your shoulder blades together
- Shoulders down, away from your ears
- Hold the band wider to make it easier
Common mistake
Arching your back to finish the move. Keep your ribs down; use a lighter band or hold it wider.
Safety
Check the band for nicks or tears before each use.
Stop and rest if you feel chest pain, dizziness, unusual shortness of breath or sharp joint pain. Get medical help if it doesn't settle.
