Sideways walk

Balance · Bodyweight

Set up

A clear stretch of kitchen counter, and flat shoes that grip.

Steps

  1. Stand tall facing the counter, hands resting on it, feet together.
  2. Step sideways with one foot, then bring the other foot next to it.
  3. Take 10 steps to one side, then 10 steps back the other way.

Keep in mind

  • Toes point forward the whole time
  • Keep your knees slightly bent and your body tall
  • Hold on lightly; let go only when steady

Common mistake

Rushing, so your feet cross or your toes turn out. Take slow, even steps with toes pointing forward.

Safety

Clear rugs and clutter out of the way first.

Stop and rest if you feel chest pain, dizziness, unusual shortness of breath or sharp joint pain. Get medical help if it doesn't settle.
