Heel-to-toe walk
Balance · Bodyweight
Set up
A clear hallway or a stretch of kitchen counter, and flat shoes that grip.
Steps
- Stand beside the counter or a wall, one hand resting on it.
- Step forward, putting your heel right in front of the toes of your other foot.
- Take the next step the same way, as if walking along a line.
- Walk 10 steps, turn round carefully, and walk back.
Keep in mind
- Look ahead, not down at your feet
- Walk slowly; take your time with every step
- Keep a hand on the counter until you feel steady
Common mistake
Looking down at your feet. Pick a spot ahead of you at eye level and keep your eyes on it.
Safety
Clear rugs and clutter out of the way first.
Stop and rest if you feel chest pain, dizziness, unusual shortness of breath or sharp joint pain. Get medical help if it doesn't settle.
